Federal and state governments provide tax incentives and other programs to encourage energy savings. Their objectives in lowering your costs include improving the environment, creating jobs and making the US more energy independent.

EPAct Section 179D is just one of many Federal programs created to encourage energy efficiency projects by corporate, municipal, fraternal and other organizations. EPAct Section 179D provides a range of fixed dollar incentives based on the square footage of the facility to be improved.

States have a myriad of programs, including unique Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) loans, which allow qualified projects to be paid off over long time periods-with payments built in to the property’s tax assessment-so that financing costs can be sold along with the property.

Electric utilities provide sizable rebates that directly reduce the out-of-pocket costs of efficiency projects. Utilities are motivated by the need to lower energy use during peak usage periods. This helps them avoid the cost of building expensive and inefficient “peaker” power plants.

Finally, certain financial institutions offer preferred rates for energy efficiency projects, because they know that upgrades are economically advantageous in addition to being good for the environment. Such loans typically do not place a lien on the entire property being improved, only on the upgraded hardware.
